Brickworkz is now in full swing. I finished the website last weekend around 5:30 in the morning, and like every artistic project, it's never really DONE done, it's only good enough for now. I'm sure I'll find some things here and there that could use changing, but for now, there it is.

The site for my LEGO mosaic company is www.Brickworkz.com so please check it out and tell your friends about the crazy LEGO guy you know who would be happy to sell them a mosaic for their home or office!

The bigger news though is that C3, a creative space downtown, has offered to host my artwork in their gallery space for June and July. I spent all last week working on finishing projects in time. Yesterday was 5 hours on my deck, sawing, chopping, screwing, hanging, framing, nailing the backboards, and this morning, everything is glued and hung at the gallery.

It is really great to see them from such a distance. The space at C3 is awesome for that. The photo mosaics I made look really hot from the distance and the reception so far has been terrific.

I get the same questions over and over again, so I've really crafted elevator pitch answers. I'm sure I'll have a Frequently Asked Questions page on my site soon enough. Here are the top 5:

How long did it take you to do this?
Have you ever considered lining each brick up so the LEGO logo is aligned correctly on all of them?
What does artwork like this cost?
When did you start doing this?
What gave you the idea to start doing this?

I hear those over and over. It's neat because I can dispell rumors at the same time. "Doesn't LEGO offer a cheaper way to do this on their website?" Well, they used to, but discontinued the mosaics from their site. They no longer sell these kits to America and are phasing out other countries as we speak. So yea, things like that.

what else is going on... hmm...

This past week has been a flurry of activity- I am getting requests for new commissioned mosaics, and am struggling to keep up with the demand, as I still don't have a lot of the administration details figured out yet. There's no pre-defined turnaround time for an estimate. I know what needs to be done for that, and now have some tools to help with that, but not knowing just sucks.

Still, it's a great problem to have. The buzz at C3 is really humming, and people really like the LEGO mosaics up on the walls. Of course, those are mostly ready, never quite finished. I have ot put a LEGO border around many of them still, and some need better hanging mechanisms, they all need descriptions and pricetags, but aside from that, I'm doing okay. It's a bit daunting though.

This would all be easier if it was my only job, but the tech consulting work spun into high gear after the upgrade project completed. Now I'm with clients every day. Finding time to grab lunch and deciding which part of the city it'll need to happen in is the big challenge.

I'm slowly getting my head above water here and having the mosaics completed and hung is really the first accomplishment/milestone that helps me see that the flurry was worth it. Its a really neat thing to see.

Now, I just need to update the site again with details on how to get to the gallery, then it's off to contact the press and get my gallery on some event calendars, maybe a little publicity too.

Here goes!

Hey Brian, this is great stuff! Love the art, man. I just have a couple of questions for you:

How long did it take you to do this?
Have you ever considered lining each brick up so the LEGO logo is aligned correctly on all of them?
What does artwork like this cost?
When did you start doing this?
What gave you the idea to start doing this?

Inquiring minds want to know!!!! (kidding. Keep up the great work.)

1) trade secret
2) yes, and the only one I know who has actually been anal enough to try it was Lauren at one of our LEGO parties. God bless her, every single white piece in the middle of my keyboard mosaic is turned upright.
3) depends on the piece...there is a formula based on market cost of the bricks and time involved.
4) 2004
5) LEGO used to offer a mosaic package that lets you design custom kits that you can build at home. I wanted to do a mosaic for friends, but it had to be bigger... much bigger. www.Brickworkz.com was born.
