My host, Jeff Pollard.

We got a tour of the new office yesterday. Our Reston office is moving over to Herndon, about 3 miles down the road. We've got the top two floors of the NAS building, right along the toll road. I'll be a block away from the gym, and a block away from a major shopping center with enough stores and restaurants to keep me busy for a good long time. My new cube (yep, I saw it) has its own window, facing Dulles Airport's tower. I'll be able to watch planes come in and take out while I work. That'll be really neat.

After the official tour of the new place, we had a paid happy hour at Breakers. Breakers is the billiards place that Paul and I dig. I took advantage of the free beverages and played some pool. It was cool. On my way home in the rain, I began thinking about how things are finally coming around at work. And the timing couldn't have been better, because today, I got a glimpse of my new job.

For a while now, I've had temporary excitement about the possibility of getting a chance to develop online communities for the company. And today, more than a year later, I got my chance. Today, I set up a Discus board for our sales team. The hardest part in the process was modifying the board to work on an SSL connection. (Security gurus don't take too kindly to loitering web visitors.) Just on a whim, I decided to toy around in the configuration of the board that, at the time, was ready to go with just one file missing. That file was necessary to run the board. I found something that fixed it today, and the angelic choir sang from up on high.

The rest of the afternoon, I was tweaking the bulletin board, getting it ready for testing. It's been more than a full year now. I'm doing what I was hired to do. Today was a good day.
